Our familys history

The history behind Don Carlos vinyards started at the small Spanish village. In 1859, Carlos Ezponda, after living in various countries came back to his natal with the dream of becoming bodeguero and producing wine of an excellent quality.

He wasn´t only a pioneer with an internacional vision and spirit, but also an enviroment preserver and the desire of helping to develop the local territory.

From that moment onwards BDC is and admirable vinyard, mantaining itself always at the top level.

Thanks to the family’s vision, the company lived a revolution in the 60’s when their alcance as wine producers expanded.

With the greater work capacity came an improvement in quality, all ready to leap into the big production.

Rioja wines are protected by the oldest denomination of Spain, recognized in 1926. Since 1991 it holds the highest category of "qualified" and is unique in Spain. The O.D covers a production area of more than 100 kilometers, out of which 58,000 hectares are cultivated with vinyards.

The quality of the grapes and the soil is the most pampered and cared for aspect, which has placed the wines as one of the most prestigious brands. The philosophy of the winery has been positioned within the range of wines of high quality, flavored and nobility.

Our vineyards offer a prime location for growing grapes because their vines receive the right amount of sun and moisture for a perfect ripening of the grapes. The quality of our wines is due, no doubt, to three premises: soil, climate and orientation.

Our Winery

To be a classic wine cellar doesn’t imply making an old wine, therefore they have incorporated the most advanced winemaking techniques that allow an adaptation to current market trends.

The winery has 150 hectares of vineyards. To ensure the quality of each grape, the family is directly involved in all aspects of production.

Evaluation of wine

The Tempranillo grape comes from our tempranillo, mencía, treixadura and godello grapes that come from payments 'Viña Carlos', which is 30 years old and located in Ribeiro (Pazo de Vieite), Bierzo (Ponferrada) and Ribera del Duero (Peñafiel). The Grenache comes from old vines planted in glass at an altitude of 600 m. in Tudelilla in plots adjacent to our 'Finca La Pedriza'.

The wine concept BDC was conceived by Quique Real, who successfully interpreted the brand values with spectacular taste and a design that shows the strong commitment of the company to nature and improvement in production and the ,grape but also of creativity and inspiration.

The same spirit has led to a growth in exports to over 10 countries in Europe and China, a number that continues to grow
